My first computer
Does Timex/Sinclair
1000, that say something to you?
Timex/Sinclair 1000 was available in store to the beginning
of the Eighties for approximately $150. It was really the first micro-computer
at an accessible price. Its weight was only 12 ounces. It had the dimension of a
large computer and came with 2K from read-write memory. It used your television
set as monitor. The programs and data were to be safeguarded on a cassette with
a tape recorder. It is a mica affixed directly on the mother chart which
replaced the keys.
Imagine a computer with only 2K of read-write memory and any hard disk nor
operating software.
We could buy programs on cassettes like: space invader, chess, labyrinth etc.
All these programs were in language BASIC. It was absolutely necessary to have
the extension of 16K to make function this software. Each cassette cost
approximately $25.
It was sold also several books and reviews with programs in BASIC which we
must type and make function on the computer and then to safeguard them on a
cassette.
At that time Timex/Sinclair 1000 was the computer more sold throughout the
world exceeding all the other put marks sets.
Thereafter an extension of read-write memory of 16K arrived
which one connected with the back of the computer. Also a small printer with
thermal paper similar to the old paper of fax was added. These modules were very
expensive but increased largely the capacity of the computer.
